Kickass, the doorstop dog, as a Madison, WI resident has never had occasion to visit Madison Square Garden in New York, but the keeper has, once, when the Democrats gathered there in 1973 to nominate Jimmy Carter as their presidential candidate.
The incident may not be as embarrassing as the POTUS experience of falling asleep at a high stakes MSG basketball game after inconveniencing thousands of irate sports fans, but the keeper is obviously more easily embarrassed than the POTUS.
As part of a Milwaukee Journal reporting team, the keeper strolled the New York streets the first morning in town and then could not find Madison Square Garden when it came time for him to report for work.
At a busy street corner, the keeper spotted a New York cop and asked, “Where the heck is Madison Square Garden?”
Over his long career of asking questions that often-generated amazement in his inquisition target, the New York cop’s reaction was particularly noteworthy. It began with his full attention, followed by a head-to-foot appraisal and then went to raised eyebrows as the officer lifted his arm and pointed directly overhead at a big sign that said, “MADISON SQUARE GARDEN!”
We were, of course, standing in the Garden’s main entrance and the keeper embraced the role of country bumpkin as he stumbled inside to consort with the Democrats.
And sometimes Phyllis wonders how the keeper can ask the location of a restaurant when they are in its parking lot!
