Linus had his security blanket. Calvin had Hobbes. Radar had his teddy bear. Ernie had his rubber duckie. Milton had his red Swingline stapler. And the Dude had his living room rug (it tied the room together, man).
Donald Trump has a blonde. That’s his comfort item, his security blanket—his binky. Her name is Natalie Harp, and (surprise) she is young, attractive, and dotes on the old man. It’s very cute, almost like a Harold and Maude situation (except that both Maude and Harold were smart and very likable), but we didn’t realize, until late last week, the degree of symbiotic dependence that existed between these two damaged people.
The White House erupted last week after Democratic senatorial candidate John Ossoff’s comments about Trump’s job performance: “The president sleeps through his meetings…He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the emir of Qatar (The Atlantic).”
Somewhat surprisingly, the far-right went nuts about the fact that Natalie was even mentioned. The didn’t care about comments that Trump was incompetent, doddering, and lazy—no, they lost it because of the implications (although it was nowhere in Ossoff’s comments) of a romantic connection. Eric Trump called Ossoff’s remarks “absolute trash” while White House communications director Stephen Cheung referred to the senator as “Jon Jackoff,” called him the “biggest cuck loser in politics” on Monday” (WRET).
While, according to Time magazine, Harp’s employee title is special assistant to the president and executive assistant to the president, her relationship to the president seems to be much closer than that of an ordinary low-level White House aide. For her $150,000 annual salary, her responsibilities include handling the president’s social media account, including posts Trump dictated to Miriam Adelson and some of vitriolic posts he used to attack E. Jean Carroll. Some reports maintain that she was the one responsible—at Trump’s direction–for creating the Truth Social post in which the Obamas were portrayed as apes and another which portrayed Trump as a Christ-like figure. She is one of the few aides who has the login to his truth social account. Her desk is immediately outside the Oval Office door, and she has become the “gatekeeper” through which callers, including foreign dignitaries, must pass. Yet, amazingly, she has no high-level security clearance.
According to anonymous White House source quoted in Esquire, “Harp spends more time with Trump than any other aide…She sits at a desk immediately outside the Oval Office. During meetings, Harp can often be found next to Trump, armed with a laptop and phones so she can quickly get the president any contact or piece of information he needs” and that “Harp serves as both a buffer and sounding board for the president, a role that has at times frustrated some White House staff, according to people familiar with the matter. Some administration officials have privately complained that Harp has shown the president material from far-right groups that is riddled with false or misleading information.”
Some incidents have demonstrated an almost spooky sort of slavish devotion to the president. When the president was on his way to court in 2023, Natalie was so upset she could not ride in the SUV with Trump that she jumped into the trunk of the vehicle. Another report detailed she sprinted after the president as he took off in his golf course in Scotland.
This slavish devotion, or—as some may term it—groupie-like obsession can be traced back to several sources. In 2018, while she was suffering from stage-2 bone cancer, Trump signed the Right to Try Bill, allowing access to new and experimental treatment plans that Harp says saved her life—claims which have been refuted by experts since.
Also, according to Natalie’s brother Preston, Harp has a history of “infatuations” with presidents, including George W. Bush. After Ossoff’s comments and the subsequent disproportional White House response, a series of letters from Harp to the president emerged, one in which she thanked the president for She thanks the former and future president for being “my Guardian and Protector in this life” and “to modify a classic, ‘I could not have parted with you, to anyone less worthy’—And, I will add, it is I who is unworthy” (Daily Beast). At one point, she lived in the locker room at one of his golf clubs in order to be near him.
For his part, Trump seems to have grown hugely dependent on his Natalie. The two of them have developed a creepy sort of delusional symbiosis. She seems to need him for self-affirmation, her purpose in life, to stand in as a father figure (her brother Preston mentioned in an interview she also had a thing for presidents and that she is “infatuated” with him.) And, since she comes from a deeply religious background, it may well be she considers him messiah-like figure.
Both as part of her own obsession (and as part of her job description), she needs to constantly the president that he’s a great man. Known as “the human printer”, because she carries a portable printer everywhere to make hard copies of tweets and posts for his boss, Harp acts as the sole conduit funneling information to the president, almost exclusively from X and Truth Social, to Trump. Since he hates to be criticized or mocked, Natalie ensures that he only hears what wants to hear. In a world which he is becoming despised, hated, and reviled, he relies on Natalie to affirm the delusion that he is the great and powerful leader he believes he is.
When Trump was spirited away to a catering truck from his Qatar luxury jet in Turkey by the Secret Service because of a possible threat, he chose Harp, not Secretary of State Rubio or Vice-president Vance to accompany him. Yet, for all her influence over Trump, Harp is virtually invisible. She never speaks in public and is only seen in the shadow of her idol. She’s as quiet as a Barbie doll.
Granted, no one can look inside a personal relationship and know exactly what goes on, but from the available evidence of letters, interviews, and inside knowledge, this relationship seems to exist only reinforce delusions, the bubbles, that both participants need to exist. The president needs to believe he is a great, powerful, and beloved world leader so strongly that he shuts reality out (fake news) and embraces only the new he wants to hear. Faced with the reality that he lost the Iran War, he insists on posting (via Natalie) images of himself as a fearsome leader throwing bombs at Iran, images which would ordinarily be pathetic and laughable were he not in control of the world’s most powerful military. Faced with abysmally low approval ratings, she finds the posts that dispute those findings. She is his binky, his security blanket, his comfort food. She protects him. In a weird way, she’s his mommy.
For Natalie’s part, she seems to want only the president’s love and acceptance. Whether these needs are wound up in her religious background, her attraction to presidential figures, her cancer, or her father is unknown. What we do know is that she’s glommed herself onto an old, broken-down man who cannot face the ugly reality he’s created. She has become his ur-fan, his emblematic symbol of his MAGA, a white, blonde woman who loves him unconditionally.
At one level, these two are a danger to national security and our welfare as a nation, but on another more human level, they seem to be two broken and pathetic human beings looking for something they cannot find—which does not excuse the president from his myriad felonies and misdemeanors. He is a monster responsible for the deaths of multitudes and the pain and suffering of millions more. When he is charged and brought to trial, he must be sentenced for his crimes and spend the rest of his life in jail, where his Natalie will probably find a way to see him.
