Kickass, the doorstop dog, sympathized with the keeper as VA dermatologists probed at the keeper’s damage from the hot suns of his youth. Wrapped in his Norwegian mother’s handed-off onion-paper skin, the keeper was prone to such sunburn that would regularly render him as immobile and useless as a burned-up bratwurst.

Before the days of sunscreen and word of the sun-cancer relationship, a country boy who wasn’t sun fried was either in the house with the measles or just back from visiting grandma in Duluth.

The keeper’s sunburn ignorance followed him into the Army where he was threatened with a court martial when a weekend pass to an ocean beach sunburned him to the point that he could not walk, or march in close order drills.

There have been other occasions when the obvious sun damage to his brain exerted itself and the keeper suffered sunburned ankles and feet and had to be rescued.

Finally, in these hot-sun days, Phyllis advises the keeper to stay in the shade while he waits for VA word on the biopsy of his most recent old-summer sunburn eruption.
