Kickass and Cooking a Shore Lunch

Kickass, the doorstop dog, notes that the colorful air wafting down from Canada reminds the keeper of one of his more embarrassing–nay, “humiliating” moments, when on a Canadian fishing trip, he took it upon himself to cook the fish shore lunch for his father, Uncle Duffy and their dear friend Pete, among several others.

In his memory gallery, resisting all erasure attempts over time, is the clear image of these three old men sitting on a log and watching sad faced as the keeper loses control of the campfire and cremates their shore lunch into totally inedible pieces of black carbon.

Among the keeper’s forgettable moments–and there are obviously many, the shore lunch debacle stands out, perhaps because of its duration–three hungry old men fishing the rest of the long day, thinking what a damn fool the keeper is and looking forward to supper back at camp with Pete doing the cooking.

Sometimes over long periods of time such things as the shore lunch disaster turn into reminiscent jokes to be retold and laughed at. But that never happened with the keeper’s shore lunch humiliation. It hangs there in the memory gallery like a forgery.

Maybe Phyllis, being a photo artist, can work some of her magic to make it less offensive!
