Kickass, the doorstop dog, goes against the wisdom that dwelling on regrets is pretty much a waste of time, and allows the keeper to dwell on the regret that when he visited Paris many years ago he did not go see the Eiffel Tower.
There is no clear memory of just how that happened but the fact that it did has been taking up space in the keeper’s “regret” closet lo these many years, crowding out such more meaningful regrets as…….
Oh, never mind. There are so many, and some of them are painful to endure. But, if it is true that “the unexamined life is not worth living” then it follows that one with no regrets must have been a total bore.
As part of his travel preparations for the inevitable “big trip” the keeper is divesting himself of as many regrets as possible. Blowing an opportunity to see the Eiffel Tower is on the list right behind the regret that he and Phyllis did not get together earlier in life. Maybe if they had met when they were younger, Phyllis, who has seen the Eiffel Tower, could have either hopped on a plane with the keeper and guided him on a complete Paris tour, or she might simply have assured him that she thinks no less of him for not having seen the Eiffel Tower.
The keeper would have no regrets either way.
