Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper deeply immersed in watching the spectacular color changes occurring in the trees that dominate his and Phyllis’s view out across Madison’s Gammon Road.
As the trees stood in their staid and steady deep green summer work garb two days ago, it was as if the rain suddenly called them to order and announced, “Summer is over. Put on something colorful and pretty, we’re going to party!”
In a dramatic transformation that presented visible hour-to- hour changes, the trees became like stately elderly ladies shucking off their daily green summer garb and getting into lacy, pre-bedtime brightly colored negligees.
The keeper’s analogy of making the trees into undressing, ready-to-party elderly ladies stops after acknowledging that if continued, the ladies would all end up standing bare naked and unprotected through a long, cold winter. Not a pleasant image and the keeper wants no part of it. Phyllis probably doesn’t either but the keeper hesitates to ask her about it!
Happy fall color watching!
