Kickass, the doorstop dog, accepts the fact that 95 years ago the keeper weighed 8 ½ pounds and had a very limited vocabulary. Seventy years later on 9/11 2001 he had gained a lot of weight and his vocabulary had grown to the point that he could complain to his daughter Pat that at the age of 70 he was getting old.
Then the horrible Trade Tower images began to show on TV and the keeper’s self-centered perspective morphed into the obvious: personal regrets about getting old are as nothing compared to the terror of being murdered and denied the privilege of pleasurable civilized aging.
That pretty much set the tone for the keeper’s succeeding 9/11 birthdays and it does so for this one: being with Phyllis and family and friends is the only thing that really matters at 95 or any other age.
(Thanks for the Happy Birthday wishes.)
