Kickass, the doorstop dog, joins the keeper and Phyllis in honoring another great woman–Gloria Steinem who died earlier this week at 92 after a lifetime of helping lead her collective gender out of the male dominate historical weeds.
Among the many things Gloria said was that there would come a day when women would gain enough power to eliminate the absurdity of men dictating women’s lives.
Such a gender bending “day” is the subplot of the keeper’s recent novel Ah, the Women!
The novel tells the story of how a young man’s small-town life is buffeted by first love, an unruly dog, obstreperous Uncle Alvin and church lady Lizzie who questions the gender of Jesus and presides over her son’s ball-bearing funeral.
Lizzie and Gloria would have liked each other.
Among the keeper’s upcoming book events is a book interview with Doug Moe at Leopold’s Books Bar Caffe on Regent Street on Monday Sept. 14 at 6 pm, and a book reading on Sept. 17 at 7 pm at Base Camp Restaurant in Mazomanie.
