Kickass, the doorstop dog, joins the keeper and Phyllis in appreciating their across-the-street school neighbors as each day they bring an infusion of youthful vigor and a subtle aura of exciting things to come. Some of this cannot help but spill over into the Vista West environs where residents are reminded of long-ago school days.
This point was especially made on a recent day when band music began to waft across Gammon Road from the vicinity of the high school athletic field. On an open-window day the sound invaded the premises with an authoritative beat and organized brass melodies.
The listening cycle went from curiosity to acceptance, and then back to curiosity as the dinner hour came and went and the band music never wavered, if anything becoming more prominent as time went on. The question became how could a high school band perform with such vigor all day and now even on into the night?
While the keeper did not confirm his conclusion with Memorial High School it dawned on him that he and Phyllis were obviously the fortunate audience of a high school band tournament in which bands from all over the area gather to do competitive performances out on the athletic field.
There can be no other explanation, and the keeper remarked to Phyllis that some of those high school drummers and horn blowers were going to end up with a late bedtime as they were still at it when Vista West residents were thinking about heading for their bedrooms.
