Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper’s connection with the beleaguered Washington reflection pool is remote and comes via the night of Oct. 4,1974 when Argentine stripper Fanne Foxe jumped out of Congressman Wilbur Mills’s limo and dove into the pool as an intoxicated Mills looked on.
Details of the incident became very public and pretty much wrapped up the powerful congressman’s career, though he won a subsequent Arkansas comeuppance election.
In his retirement, Wilbur created an alcoholic treatment organization and he and his wife traveled the country to promote it.
It was on their visit to Eau Claire, Wisconsin that the keeper experienced his remote reflecting pool connection. Meeting Wilbur and his wife in a small conference room, the keeper remembers thinking that the Congressman probably didn’t want to be traveling on a mission of contrition and would much rather be heading the ways and means committee back in DC.
That’s how the reflecting pool can do you in, and the current crew of pool fools in their leaky waders appear destined for a similar ignominious fate.
“GO, POOL, GO!”
