Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper and Phyllis enjoying a usual great breakfast at the Pancake Café near Gammon and Watts–interesting menu, lots of room, excellent service and a low noise level that encourages conversation.
So, there was a warm visit with the very efficient waitress who responded to Phyllis’s polite question with details about working three jobs–one of them in UW research, to keep her college student kids in their chosen academic places while she provides the essentials of life.
It was a matter-of-fact report that is obviously common to other members of the Pancake Café busy staff and to millions of others working three jobs to keep families fed and happy.
The waitress had been in the US several years, having migrated from a war-torn Croatia, and her sense of that having been a wise migrating decision was obvious.
As usual, the keeper ordered more than he could eat, and the “to-go” box carried remnants of a new friendship and a surge of anger and resentment at the narcissistic billionaire oafs hanging out in the White House like besotted plantation owners.
