Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper making the switch from winter to summer shirts, which means short sleeves and bare arms for the next four months or so. The move equates to the critters shedding their winter coats and the birds showing up with new flight feathers.

On this last day of May, there was a morning chill coming in through the door that Phyllis had propped open, and for inexplicable reasons that jogged the keeper’s memory back to his boyhood when he had been astounded to learn that Grandpa Helgeland wore long underwear all summer.

A skinny Norwegian man who never stopped moving and treated the keeper with typical “first-grandchild” delight, Grandpa Helgeland was a quiet community fixture known and respected by everyone. And if he preferred wearing long johns under his bib overalls on the 4th of July that was his business. It is also the keeper’s business that as he shivers a bit near the open door he goes back to the closet for a flannel shirt to wear over his short sleeves.

Style to an old man is whatever makes you feel good!

Right, Grandpa H!
