Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper has never been on the first team of morel mushroom hunters, and now in his retirement status he hears the reports from granddaughter Sarah that this would not be a good year to try to come out of retirement.

Sarah, who is visiting from her California home, has become a mushroom aficionado and has spent hours roaming the local wooded hills in a largely futile morel hunt.

“It’s a weird morel season,” Sarah says. “Not enough rain at the right time.”

But Sarah will keep hunting because listening to her describe her unproductive experience in

glowing terms means she has obviously latched onto the family genes that make solitary meandering in the woods on a spring day one of life’s great delights, with or without morels. It is a magical visit to the incredible birthing place of all things and the keeper and Phyllis are out there with Sarah in an enthusiastic spirit.
