Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper and Phyllis noting that ICE agents are reportedly tormenting the Wisconsin Native American citizenry apparently as suspected immigrants. With the stupidity of this beyond laughable, it prompts a keeper memory of the time when, as a Milwaukee Journal columnist, he assigned himself the task of providing a needed piano for the Menominee senior center at Keshena.
A reader couple in Stevens Point generously donated their basement piano, but when the keeper and his Journal delivery crew showed up to collect it, a remodeled basement stairway blocked their way and there was no way that piano was coming out of that basement short of an extensive house remodel.
What to do as a piano reception committee waited up at Keshena?
In an effort that was sure to spread his embarrassment, the keeper went to the Stevens Point radio station which very cooperatively broadcast a plea for a piano, which was almost immediately responded to by a member of the American Legion who said there was an extra piano down at the Legion hall and they would be happy to donate it.
The piano was immediately loaded onto a Milwaukee Journal delivery truck and hauled up to the beautiful Menominee woods and the waiting senior center piano players, a bit late but still in time for a brief round of hymn singing.
This all happened a very long time ago but it remains relavant as an example for ICE in treating nonimmigrants, immigrants and natural born citizens: When somebody–anybody– needs a piano, get them one and then get the hell out of town with your mask still in place.
