Kickass, the doorstop dog, will be starting the new year by assisting the keeper and Phyllis as they review the true significance of “sit and stay!” in their lives.
This old dog-training command obviously goes far beyond its original aim of having the target subject actually “sit and stay” in a given location until another command supersedes it, perhaps “fetch” or “rollover.”
It is the keeper’s impression that the year just ended was a tough one to “sit and stay” in and the only time he heard “Good boy,” was when he helped Phyllis make a protest sign that said, “Hope Is Alive.”
Well, yes, hope is alive and the keeper and Phyllis’s very senior crowd plan to use it as the members “sit and stay” on the couches of 2026, helping Kickass gnaw on the tennis ball and eyeball the cat.
