Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper identifying with FBI director Kash Patel on the possible fallout of giving girlfriends a ride home.
When it happened to the keeper, that fallout literally turned his life around. He was doing the chivalrous task of giving a young lady a ride to her Almena home when the local Barron cop decided the keeper was too full of beer and needed to get off the road. The upshot was, a $50 fine, the end of contacts with Almena girls and, the loss of the keeper’s driving privileges.
It is impossible to live as a young man in a small rural town and not have wheels. The keeper immediately sold his car and enlisted in the Army and was promptly sent to a shooting war in Korea.
And while that was not a walk in the park, the resulting educational and health care opportunities made possible a far different life than the keeper might have led had he stayed in Barron, perhaps married to an Almena girl and operating heavy equipment for the county highway department in the footsteps of his father. That might not have been a bad life but it wouldn’t have included floating down the Mississippi on the Delta Queen with Jimmy and Roselyn Carter and hundreds of other wonderful newspaper adventures.
Look on the bright side, Kash: maybe using the FBI to give your girlfriend’s girlfriend a ride home will get you invited to a Mara Largo pool party.
Or you could always enlist in the Army and get to see Venezuela.
