Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that the keeper and Phyllis, in keeping with their previous plan to turn the calendar instead of the clock back to comply with the daylight savings time scheme, will see the keeper going back to the early 1930’s when he was a toddler and the depression had claimed a family business, there were no jobs to be had and there was no money for food.
Enter small town Jewish grocer Harry Meyers who put essential groceries on a tab that ran through the winter and was the first thing paid off in the spring when the keeper’s father found work digging sewer trenches.
Obviously the keeper has only a dim personal memory of the depression food threat, but the experience of surviving that one winter through the kindness of Harry Meyers became part of the fabric of family lore as the story was revived often in almost reverential tones.
Kindness, when it extends to feeding kids is never forgotten. Neither is the unconscionable narcissistic cruelty that enriches the billionaires and ignores the desperate pleading of the hungry masses.
