Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that when he was a young man it was almost impossible to get the keeper out of bed in the morning. An account of that as it handicapped things at a deer hunting camp once appeared in a tattletale article by a fellow Milwaukee Journal reporter to the keeper’s discomfort. It detailed pulling off the bed covers, physical manipulation and finally the generous application of cold water.
The keeper’s father was all too familiar with the routine and among the keeper’s vivid early memories is one of dad standing over his bed with a dipper of cold water. Dad is smiling. The keeper obviously is not, having his eyes shut at the time.
Somehow over the years the keeper’s inclination to sleep like a hibernating bear left him and has been replaced by a warning system that tells him to get up right now or risk wetting the bed.
Cold water in bed is one thing; warm water would be quite another!
The keeper reassures Phyllis and reminds her that unless there is some kind of a medical appointment the keeper might just stay in bed all day to avoid news of the political outrageousness. After visiting the bathroom, of course.
