Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports on the lady who came to the winery alone, to sit in the bright Sunday sunshine at a table near the keeper and Phyllis, to exchange casual greetings and to drink her wine in peaceful solitude.
As she put on her sunhat and prepared to depart, the keeper told her if he did not have the good fortune of being in the company of his beautiful wife Phyllis, he might have put a “pickup” move on the solitary lady.
This audacious statement led to information from the solitary lady that for some 60 years she had enjoyed the company of a “wonderful” man who departed her life a couple of years ago and is sorely missed to this day, especially on a beautiful day like today.
For some perspective here, all participants in the little winery drama were old enough to appreciate that a very old man’s audacity may have multiple purposes, one to get a smile from his tolerant younger wife and another to put male company in the solitary lady’s life, however briefly and convoluted.
