Kickass, the doorstop dog, is unable to help the keeper and Phyllis with current budgeting issues that are compounded by the outrageously high cost of everything.
The keeper, for example, faced the necessity of getting the car serviced and having a small tooth cavity filled. There was a time, of course, when he could have afforded both but not when auto service work and dental maintenance costs are what once represented the price of a small farm.
Phyllis is faced with an exorbitant medicine cost estimate that may or may not help her with a significant eye pain issue. Does she take a chance on it or just go on hurting?
It is not pleasant for the keeper and Phyllis to face the prospect of life with painful eyes and a toothache, but at least they will have wheels, until they run out of gas, that is.
