Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that the keeper and Phyllis spend considerable time and energy relating to the land areas of their past while giving the waters–creeks, lakes and rivers—only passing mention.
Such was the case with a recent visit to the keeper’s boyhood haunts when water took a backseat to dry land “reminder” stops. Beyond mention of the Yellow River flowing through much of the keeper’s youth, there was no reference to the “car wash” creek crossing and the exquisite little brook trout therein, the lakes that assumed thick vehicle-supporting ice for fishermen family members, Sunday afternoons around the picnic table at the family cottage on the little bog lake with the pitcher plants along the shore.
The list could go on to the very temporary dry run swimming hole on the home farm to the distant secret beaver pond full of the most breath-takingly beautiful brook trout imaginable.
The point is made that though the keeper has evolved to become a landed creature, there is this undefinable reminder that he and Phyllis and all like them have an attachment to the water that is a privilege to acknowledge.
