Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper and Phyllis joining neighbors Marsha and Jack to catch the last Madison Overture performance of “The Assassins,” the Sondheim-Weidman musical created 35 years ago and updated to include more recent attempts on presidents’ lives.
To see and hear the portrayal of the demented would-be presidential assassins in the current adversarial POTUS climate presents a strange challenge to an audience member and explains how official “reviewers” are very careful to isolate the musical from today’s presidential hostility.
The keeper tried, but there were times during the outstanding Sunday performance when he felt as if he might be sitting in a Titanic deckchair listening to the orchestra’s last number and wondering how the NRA was already on the lifeboats.
