Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper and Phyllis peeking under the lush green curtain that recently fell to hide the greatest show on earth.
They see big gawky birds laying eggs in ragged treetop rookeries, thousands of exquisite warblers warbling to each other, fresh dirt from countless burrows where squeaking young demand to be fed, patches of magnificent wildflowers transforming to the business of seed production, whitetail does with heavy bellies looking for birthing privacy, parents of infinite variety all set in the only mode that matters—propagation of the species.
Having been part of that aspect of the great greening show many years ago, the keeper and Phyllis now participate by turning green with envy at the youthful bent of what they now see as they peek behind the curtain.
Then they think about it and agree that the “greening” message is not “Ah, to be young again,” It is simply to “be.”
