Kickass and Staying in the Game

Kickass, the doorstop dog, joins the keeper and Phyllis in sorting through the constant flow of advice on how to live–and die, and they are currently hung up on the issue of how the need for challenges in this age of comfort and safety is essential, especially with the “aging.”

Viewed from evolutionary facts this translates to replacing the attack of a fifty-foot Tyrannasaurus Rex with getting out of the recliner.

To assert that life becomes unhealthy for lack of physical challenges, especially for the older crowd, denies the hostility of gravity as it drops its youthful “fun” potential and turns into a crotchety force of potential falls and broken bones.

Some of this is moderated with improved terminology. The keeper suggests that within his age group, bending over to retrieve a dropped item be referred to as “skydiving,” and trips to the bathroom are called “mini marathons,” one of which the keeper will now be running.
