Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper observing that the measure of social value by the very young is largely influenced by the amount of noise made and how it is made, hence the awe and respect for the trash collectors banging around with their awesome over-the- top loader trucks and the operators of the street sweepers and snowplows that circulate through the neighborhoods like invaders from another planet.
Little faces pressed against windows message to developing brains that the best perch in the awesome adult world out there is behind the wheel of one of those fantastic machines and that is where the little observers tell themselves they will end up when they grow up.
Some of the lucky ones make it and the others watch them from their adult perches with latent envy.
