Kickass, the doorstop dog, cautions the keeper about going so deep into his past that he mentions the price of gas at 5 gals for $1. Memory exercise of this kind tend to brand the keeper as either careless with the facts or performing for attention. His defense is sticking to the truth.
Let the record show that the keeper’s first job off the farm was working at Cliff Horstman’s Standard station in Barron WI where gas might have been slightly higher than 5-gals-for-a-dollar, but you could buy a candy bar for a dime and a new tire for $4.
Who would ever deny an old man the pleasures of “back in my day” recitations, particularly ones that paint such a dream image of a time when you could fill up your gas tank and still have enough money left to buy food, or at least a candy bar for Phyllis?
