Kickass, the doorstop dog, notes the keeper and Phyllis accepting with gratitude the extra hour of March 7, 2025 and hanging it on a hook with all of the others—in the keeper’s case that would be about 34,467 hours and—hopefully, counting. Phyllis’s hour tally is impressive but not in the stratosphere like the keeper’s.
The extra hour of March 7, 2025 included a family gathering with typical lengthy discussions of aches and pains, the status of replaced joints, a review of past misdeeds, a listing of economic woes and brief but caustic political pronouncements. The hour included a noisy gang of active boys to remind the keeper of when he couldn’t sit still for even a minute and an hour was long enough to hide your brother’s bike or eat a gallon of ice-cream.
An hour is a most valuable thing and when an extra one comes along it has to be honored, especially if you are on the hourly clock at 34,467.
