Kickass and Ambulance Call

Kickass, the doorstop dog, notes that the keeper and Phyllis live five floors over the entrance of Vista West where they look down at the parking circle used by the frequent emergency vehicles.

There is one there now, an ambulance that came howling off Gilbert Road with red lights flashing to make the turn and stop partly under the entry canopy to discharge the crew with their gurney in hand.

The big fire engine comes flashing up the street to park out at the curb and discharge another trio of emergency techs who walk quickly into the building.

Then the waiting and the wondering begin: who and what and why? At times the call ends with a gray-haired passenger riding off with the ambulance, lights flashing sometimes, other times not.

Maybe the keeper or Phyllis will hear later who the emergency call was for. And maybe not. It is enough to know it was not for either of them.

This morning’s call ends quietly as the fire engine and the ambulance depart with only the professional crews on board and with no siren or flashing red lights.

April 8, 2025 promises to be a great day!
