The War at Home exists to inform the public about the forces threatening the very existence of America’s public education system. This hallowed institution is currently under siege from privatized interests who seek to dismantle and ultimately destroy this guardian of our most significant freedom, the freedom of thought. Education is a public institution, owned by the people, paid for by the people, and benefiting all the people. But all this is changing.
- Public school funding across the country has been cut drastically.
- Qualified teachers have been leaving the profession as their rights, benefits, and salaries have been slashed.
- Private charters, many of them unregulated by state laws or standards, are springing up across the country.
- The current Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, is an advocate of privatized education who has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to representatives in Congress who back the establishment of private charters.
In short, our education system is under siege. Public schools are beholden to no one but our citizens and to nothing but the truth. If they become pawns of the corporate giants, their teachers and administrators will no longer answer to us; they will answer to their CEO and their Board of Directors. Taxpayer dollars will still pay for public schools, but taxpayers will no longer run them.
