Kickass and a Fishing Lie

Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that the keeper in this age of lies and more lies, recalls “The Good Lie,” which was the title of a story of his that appeared in the June 1993 issue of Sports Afield magazine.

It was about an old man–Ben Lusby and his handicapped son–Alvin taking the pre-school keeper redhorse fishing in his coaster wagon and setting him up to “catch” a big fish that had already been caught once before.

Somehow the keeper was onto the scheme but went silently along with it as it involved neighbor and family recognition and compliments from a smiling Alvin.

In retrospect, the story was not really about a “lie,” it was the “truth” about the old, the young and the handicapped getting together to demonstrate one of the joys of generational human kindness.

The keeper will consult with Phyllis about a replacement title, maybe something like “A Believable Fish Story.”
