Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper toying with a new way of measuring his long life as he counts how many TV news anchors he has gone through as Lester Holt hung it up last night with his trademark “Take care of each other.”
The roster begins with Walter Cronkite “And that’s the way it is” and proceeds through a long list of news readers who became for a time like a distant member of the family—perhaps like an “Uncle Walter Who Waltzes With Bears.”
As a Trib columnist the keeper did a piece about a fan of Walter’s coming to a Chicago book signing with no intentions of buying Walter’s book but simply “to see Walter.”
Walter responded to the column with a personal note of appreciation and an invitation to meet sometime for lunch, which never took place, of course.
The keeper and Phyllis do not always catch an evening news anchor these days, news being what it is and the mockery it makes of Lester’s signoff–“Take care of each other.”
AND THAT’S THE WAY IT IS!
