Kickass, the doorstop dog, warns the keeper that it is possible to overdo in saving mementos as they are wont to span time on very rickety bridges and leave you stranded on an impossible fantasy island.
So it was with the keeper’s 1944-1945 Wisconsin resident hunting and trapping licenses that somehow surfaced in a box of junk in son Mike’s cluttered life.
The licenses record the keeper as 13 years old, weighing 84 pounds, standing 5 feet tall and having blue eyes and brown hair. The cost of each license was one dollar.
So now the keeper must deal with his youthful ignorance in thinking that there was no ethical problem in leg-hold trapping of wild creatures, and he must try to remember the hijinks of deer hunting with adventurous cousins.
Maybe the keeper will talk to Phyllis about the fact that he now weighs more than twice as much as he did back in 1944-1945 and he is ten inches taller.
And then again, maybe he won’t mention those documented numerical facts but instead steer the conversation with Phyllis around to point out that he still has blue eyes and brown hair.
How lucky can you get with mementos from 80 years ago!
