In Bad Faith

Nelson West, a former Chicago homicide detective, is hired by wealthy heir Lionel Bing to discreetly help “fix” scandals and legal problems for his father’s wealthy friends. Bing, a brilliant but troubled investigator, suffers from PTSD symptoms as a result of being kidnapped and witnessing the murder of his mother as a child. West, himself haunted by a murder case he was unable to solve, joins forces with Lionel to investigate the case of a five-million-dollar loan fraud. The case takes them from elite financial boardrooms to the jungles of Mexico where they uncover an unlikely link between a gold mine, the Catholic Church, and the ruthless chief of a drug cartel
What readers are saying:
A novel worth your time puts you in interesting company, takes you to interesting places and makes you care about what happens—Geoffrey Carter’s latest “IN BAD FAITH” does all of that and more. Writing with a crisp, sparse style that puts the reader in the midst of the action, Carter creates multidimensional characters that become traveling companions on a fascinating quest to right wrongs in a world of outrageous schemes and loud-talking big money. From the tough streets of Chicago to even tougher remote Mexican towns with their religious/gang entanglements, Carter invites the reader along to listen in as Nelson, Mia and Lionel sort through one complexity after another as things go from bad to worse to where is the missing five million dollars and were the Mexican miners actually murdered for money? In the midst of all of this is the mental health issue that started it all and the sensitive way treatment is approached.Carter has done a lot of good work here, and “In Bad Faith” measures up in all the ways a good novel should.

In In Bad Faith, Geoff Carter’s private eye Nelson West joins a long line of detectives whose talk, brains, scrapes, and adventures keep readers enthralled for hours on end. Like Sara Paretsky with V. I. Warshawski, Carter has created a rough-edged Chicagoan with a troubled past, a nose for lies, and a habit of getting in (and out of) jams. Ex-cop West’s prickly, complicated, relationship with super-rich Lionel Bing—at once a client, boss, patient, sidekick, teacher, and student—adds emotional intensity and comic relief to a well-crafted story. Geoff Carter’s skill in shaping characters with many layers, creating a plot that twists as it sprints, and writing dialog that crackles with tension make In Bad Faith a delightful story. West’s inner monologs heighten the tale’s intensity. At times they made me laugh out loud. Once you start this book, you’ll find it gripping. After you finish, you’ll be more than pleased you read it.
