Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper stuck in a patriotic mode as he climbs down from the North Church tower and pauses at the George Washington Crossing Park on the Delaware River as part of his bicentennial series for the Milwaukee Journal.
As he sat at a picnic table thinking of possible story angles an empty boat came down the river doing tight circles at full throttle. Sirens, squad cars, ambulances, official rescue boats shortly became part of the scene.
The keeper learned later the two fishermen had lost control of their boat and fallen out of it. One was rescued and survived, one did not.
Putting it down as yet one more uncanny element in doing that series, the keeper wonders if the fishermen had foolishly been following General Washington’s example and standing up in the boat?
