Kickass, the doorstop dog, joins the keeper and Phyllis in wishing a belated happy birthday to the keeper’s son Mike and reminding him once again that his birth was not a big enough deal to interfere with the keeper’s fishing.
On the way home from the birthing hospital with toddler son Rick along, the keeper stopped at a Lake Wingra backwater to make a couple of casts. Rick, mistakenly judging green algae-covered water to be solid carpeting, stepped off into it and disappeared under water.
The keeper interrupted his fishing to rescue a very surprised Rick which meant they were both very wet.
It has, of course, occurred to the keeper that had an observer been aware of the circumstances it would have been possible to conclude that here was a man coming from attending the birth of yet another son and apparently drowning one he already had. This poses the question of how many boys are enough in one family? In the keeper’s case the answer is four—Larry, Scott, Rick and Mike, with their sister Pat as a delightful bonus.
Happy Birthday, Mike, and know how you have made it so easy over the years to welcome you as a “LAST BORN” son!
