Kickass Stays Inside

Kickass, the doorstop dog, cautions the keeper to restrain his inclination to smugness over the fact that when winter comes roaring back from its AWOL status with ice and snow and cold wind, the keeper’s “Independent Living” lifestyle at Vista West allows him to stay inside with Phyllis and look out through the window at the snowplow operators and sidewalk shovelers and salt spreaders and the rest of the winter “outsiders.”

As an assist to others who may find themselves in similar circumstances, the keeper suggests opening an outside door just long enough to shout through it, “Shiver, you poor Wisconsin cheeseheads, and try not to fall on your ass!”

The therapeutic value of such an act is immeasurable and is enhanced by eating a big pancake breakfast at a table that provides a view of the machine operator working on the snow-clogged driveway, perhaps with a machine that does not have a cab.
