Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports the keeper at a loss in attempting to compose some light-hearted Facebook post in the face of the global catastrophe now being dictated by the new administration.
Like jokes for grieving survivors at a crash site, anything humorous the keeper attempts to do runs the risk of burdening him with the trappings of an insensitive fool.
This is an identity he is not totally unfamiliar with, given his many years of newspaper column writing, though he was sometimes able to turn such a hostile response on its head and make a joke out of it, such as once running a column correction demanded by a dental organization that read “it is fun to go to the dentist!”
But the avalanche of narcissistic garbage spilling daily out of the Washington environs becomes increasingly hard to joke about as it involves more suffering onto death for more people at the direct hands of insensitive billionaires, some elected and some who just bought in.
It is too late, however, for meaningful change in the keeper’s way of doing things, plus nobody likes to see an old man cry.
So here’s a comment that Phyllis might appreciate “MAGA” means “Make America Grovel Again.”
It’s not very funny or original, but it happens to be true and Phyllis likes truth.
