Kickass, the doorstop dog, is on another recycled, long-ago grouse hunt with the keeper, this one up in the northwest where the keeper and the other hunters, all carrying shotguns, stood in the farmyard with their new farmer friend who planned to join the hunt. The delay was due to the keeper’s missing dog, a trouble making springer spaniel named Doc who had disappeared and did not respond to shouted summons.
Finally, as the hunt delay became increasingly significant, Doc made his appearance from behind the barn, awkwardly attached to the farmer’s dog in that post-coital posture that evolution has imposed on the canines.
The keeper’s new farmer friend raised his shotgun, aimed it at the hooked-up dogs and said, “Which one of the SOBs should I shoot first?”
The keeper, not sure of the farmer’s serious intentions experienced a moment of panic before it became obvious that the farmer had spoken in jest and everyone had a good laugh.
The grouse hunt then commenced, with Doc displaying a noticeable absence of his usual enthusiasm.
