Kickass, the doorstop dog, joins the keeper and Phyllis as they pretend to be part of the back-to-school crowd now firmly ensconced in the current term. They watch as their “fellow” students swarm into the schools over across Gammon Road and they imagine what classes they will find most interesting on this day.
They remember how thrilling it was when it was actually them entering the new school term and then when it was their eager kids and then their grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Time marches on and the keeper and Phyllis are still in that wonderful “school opening” part of it.
