Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that while the keeper has not really participated in a presidential debate, he did at one point get into a gentlemanly discussion with a POTUS over who had caught the biggest trout while fishing in Yellowstone the previous year.
It was on the Delta Queen floating down the Mississippi with Jimmy and Roselyn Carter for three days in the late70’s when the keeper spent a half-hour one-on-one with Jimmy after press secretary Jody Powell suggested the keeper tell Jimmy about Midwest trout streams.
The Milwaukee Journal story that resulted elicited a White House response that included an autographed photo at the Delta Queen rail that is a keeper treasure.
Details of the event are recorded in the keeper’s “Treeson, an APOLOGIA to The Trees,” published several years ago and available on Amazon or from him at billstokesauthor.com.
The keeper brings it up now with the reasoning that if two current POTUS debaters can argue about golf scores, he can certainly tell of the time he and Jimmy got into it over who had caught the biggest fish. In the end, the keeper let Jimmy win because he was, after all, POTUS.
