Kickass, the doorstop dog, noting that under the rubric that everybody gotta be somewhere, reports the keeper and Phyllis in one of Dane County’s more striking beauty spots: Indian Lake County Park off Highway 19.

Marking the location where the last glacier gave up its icy ghost, there are before and after landscapes to be contemplated from comfortable benches and trails to hike for more detail.

Across the highway is the Matz Farmstead with the well-known stone foundation in the Halfway Prairies Wildlife area and a segment of The Ice Age Trail.

Among the thought-provoking moments on a sunny afternoon in such beautiful places were some that marveled at the foresight of forebearers who came here first—like the Matz family, and those who followed with enough sense to preserve these wondrous spots for the likes of the keeper and Phyllis.

Then, of course, it was necessary to contemplate that mountain of traveling ice that was here such a short time ago.

There is room on any number of Indian Lake “contemplation” benches.
