Kickass and Conception Day

Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that as the keeper, gets ready for an age milestone, he notes that nobody’s birthday is possible without their having been a conception day nine months previously.

Just why conception day is not celebrated, and is even pretty much ignored, if not denied, speaks to the dichotomous place of sexual intercourse in the grand scheme of things: an enjoyable response to a biological urge but inadmissible as a subject of polite conversation in mixed company.

Breaking with that discipline, the keeper likes to think that sometime in mid-December of 1930, with a crippling economic depression raging and no jobs to be had, his Mom and Dad “made love” and he was conceived.

In the milieu of parental memories, add an imagined one of two young people making love and thus making the keeper.

“Thanks, Mom and Dad. You didn’t know I was there on that December occasion, but I was.”

(Happy conception day to everyone from the keeper and Phyllis!)
