Kickass, the doorstop dog, joins the keeper in saluting the labor unions for what they once meant to the dignity and power of working people like the keeper’s crane-operator father.

For a long time, Labor Day meant a fishing weekend with John Lawton, Madison labor attorney being cut short—even from the great Wolf River, as John returned to give a speech at the Madison Labor Temple.  There was never a doubt in John’s mind about the priority of that speech over a trout-producing fly hatch.  The keeper might have questioned the priority, but John never did.
