Kickass, the doorstop dog, joins the keeper in congratulating all those young troopers who made it through the first week of school; and he warns against student loans, at least until second grade, despite what the kids might hear from the Republican sponsored credit industry, and those far-right ignoramuses who demand that teachers tell students that Anne Frank was the tooth fairy.
As usual, school opening moves the keeper to recall his “first days” at the one-room country school up in Barron County about a hundred years ago, and the mile-and-one-half walk to get there, which was, of course, uphill both coming and going.
