Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that Phyllis is back behind the wheel, having taken a two-year break following the head-on collision in Cross Plains that fractured ten of her ribs and one vertebra and deeply slashed a finger. The keeper—four broken ribs, had been driving at the time and was powerless to avoid the other driver who veered across traffic and into his lane.
Both Phyllis and the keeper were saved from more serious injury by airbags and the total-loss collapse of the front of their Subaru. Phyllis spent four days in the hospital and the keeper one; and since that time, Phyllis has not felt up to getting behind the wheel, though she has driven across the country many times.
But she is back on the road, competently and cautiously, and happy to be able to drive to her own appointments, while the keeper enjoys the scenery from the passenger seat or stays home with his usual deep thoughts.
One of those thoughts is that he is a lucky man, and gets luckier with each day as he goes down life’s road with Phyllis.
