Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that in the interests of retaining a semblance of relevance, the keeper now has a job which he created for himself after the bus at Vista West, where he and Phyllis live, was temporarily out of service because some jerk crawled under it and sawed off the catalytic converter.
The converters, with their metal content more valuable than gold, can bring big money when sold to recyclers; and this circumstance, which caused the Vista West bus to be sidelined, infuriated the keeper to the point that he took matters into his own hands, and he is now the unofficial nighttime security watchman of the bus, which is nightly parked directly below his bedroom window.
While he probably does not stare out the bedroom window any more than the average person, the keeper’s new self-appointed job calls for him to periodically look down at the bus, and should he see someone’s feet or legs sticking out from under it, to then call the police.
He would consider this “under-cover” work, but it is, of course just the opposite, calling for him to be out from under the covers.
The keeper has not had an in-depth discussion with Phyllis about his new job, in fact he has not even mentioned it to her: some things lose relevance when they are shared, though the keeper is sure Phyllis would volunteer to be his assistant.
