Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that the keeper’s long-range view of the crossing guard down on the corner gives him—the keeper, an opportunity to witness one of countless examples of the Human race devising and using a means to blend conflicting interests to the benefit of all.
It is a thing of beauty in its simplicity: stop the speeding cars so the kids can walk across the street on their way to school.
Every weekday morning it happens on tens of thousands of street corners; and the keeper offers up this positive fact as something to think about instead of dwelling on how the world’s Military Industrial Complex has got us killing each other yet again on the street corners of modern cities where the crossing guards of decency and sanity have fled the scene.
