Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that the keeper, in giving Phyllis’s visiting daughter Gina and husband Steve a windshield tour of the UW campus, came away with a renewed appreciation for the vibrancy and variety of the town where he has spent most of his life.
From Langdon Street and the cockroach-infested old apartment where it all started for him as a student about a hundred years ago, to the other end of the campus where he and Phyllis now both make regular visits to the UW-related medical facilities that keep them upright and moving, the Saturday afternoon drive was an exercise in remembering and marveling at how some things change and some things stay the same.
The crowds of those visiting the Statue of Liberty nonsense out on the ice of Lake Mendota in front of Memorial Union more or less captured the spirit of the day and the character of the campus and the city.
That doesn’t seem to change; and while Gina and Steve and Phyllis seemed to enjoy the tour, the keeper enjoyed it more.
