Kickass, the doorstop dog, reports that the keeper, like everyone else with family or loved ones in Colorado, made a phone call—to his son Rick and wife Becky who live in a Denver suburb, to be reassured that they were not involved in the unbelievable conflagration that consumed hundreds of homes in the Boulder area.
The call revealed the lengthy misery Rick and Becky have suffered due to the Covid pandemic, and their optimism that the worst may be over.
Within the two items—raging destruction as a result of global warming, and the presence of a killer epidemic, the ignorant denial and resistance of mostly the Repubs comes into sharp focus.
If burning down someone’s house and killing their loved ones is not enough to overcome narcissistic misinformation and the resulting inaction, there may not be a way for eight billion people to continue clinging to the big ball.
In spite of that dire possibility, the keeper and Phyllis resolve to see their ages as simply numbers, and to keep on “clinging”; and as they do so, they wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR!
